Telly Tuita, A Dog God, 2020

475 x 730 mm

Acrylic & collage on digital print, framed in dyed European birch.

From our exhibition with Telly Tuita, 'Tongpop He-story' 2020.

Tongpop He-story is another chapter in Tuita’s Tongpop world, a response to Tongpop She-Story exhibited earlier in 2020 at Weasel Gallery, Kirikiriroa-Hamilton.

While Tongpop She-Story follows Hikule’o, Tongpop He-Story is Tuita delving into aspects of his own identity within his Tongpop landscape, autobiographical in nature.

Telly Tuita is Tongan born Wellington artist. Tuita works predominantly in paint and photography as well as through performance art. Concerned with location, connection and cultural identity, Tuita’s practice is an ongoing review of people and events which traverses time. Mythical figures feature prominently in the works alongside people from Tonga’s colonial history. Deeply personal and simultaneously reflective of the experiences of many, Tuita’sworks are gaining recognition across Australasia for their relevance, complexity and assuredness.
